The More Things Change

heart-1503998_640I really have to comment April De Costa’s article, ‘5 Myths about Sex and Aging: Pervasive urban legends linger about aging and sex, perhaps due to America’s lack of interest in its elder citizens’ published on AlterNet calling out the myths about sex and aging. And those myths apply to men and women.

Sure, hormone levels change and the libido may require a wake up call, but with the right amount of encouragement, foreplay, a touch or two of a modern lubricant and being prepared to ‘take your time’, sex can be more interesting than ever. Creativity is key.

April writes, “Sexuality has no age cap. There’s no reason to believe you’ll find yourself wistfully daydreaming about sexual escapades of yore.” She finds that AARP reports that “85% of men and women age 60+ report having at least one sexual experience (with another person) per week.” Now that’s a lot. She also quotes A National Council on Aging survey revealing that, “74 percent of the men and 70 percent of the women find their sex lives more satisfying than when they were in their forties.”

Just add sex to all those activities on your list under the heading, ‘use it or lose it’.
